Keeping Your Home Air Clean

Its time to clean your air duct and today we are going to talk about air duct cleaning equipment. Do you or any members of your family have allergy symptoms that include runny noses, itchy eyes, crusted over eyes in the morning or a great deal of sneezing and a general dose of stuffiness? The culprit might not be seasonal allergies at all; the problem may lie somewhere hidden in your house, behind the drywall, in the ductwork.

All of the various furnaces, heat pumps and air conditioning units stress that you need to change the filters every month or six weeks for optimal performance of the unit in question. If you find your old filters are rather dirty after four to six weeks, imagine what your duct work looks like after how many years of neglect.

Fabric filters are designed to trap only the largest particles and do nothing to keep the duct work clean. Smaller particles pass through the filters and depending on the humidity may come all the way through into the house or become attached to the inside surface of a duct. Over time this dust film can become quite thick and create issues and a breeding ground for bacteria, dust mites and even mold if you live in a humid climate.

How can you get your duct work cleaned? Sadly, this is one are that the average do it yourself handyman cannot do himself. There is specialized equipment involved that professional residential cleaning companies have access to that does the job.

Because duct work is not easily accessed and is usually behind drywall and other finished areas, the cleaning device resembles a plumber’s snake that is flexible but also has a vacuum attachment to suck up any dislodged dirt, grime, dust and pests, lurking in your walls in the duct work. Once you have determined that your duct work needs cleaning you need to address the root cause of the problem.

Installing an electrostatic air cleaner on your heating and cooling system and using furnace filters that cost more than a dollar or two can greatly reduce the amount of dust, allergens and contaminants in the air of your home. To otherwise improve the air quality you can use an ionic air purifier, especially if you have allergy sufferers in the household.

There are several companies that make air duct cleaning equipment for commercial use. One of them is Abatement Technologies in Suwannee, Georgia. All of the industrial vacuums from Abatement Technologies are very portable, and are specifically designed for air duct cleaning with HEPA filtration for best results.

You can buy start up packages to start your own IAQ business (Indoor air Quality). Start up packages start at sixty four hundred dollars and go up to fourteen thousand dollars for the most complete and powerful package.

Here is a breakdown of what you get for sixty four hundred dollars. Included in Package D are the H2200 Power Vacuum, with Subaru Engine Compressor, Power Whip cleaning system, ten feet of vacuum hose, Quick Connect, Inlet Duct Quick Connect, Zone Bags, Hole Plugs, one inch Hole Cutter, twelve inch Hole Cutter and a Training Video.

As you move up in the start up packages the power of your vacuum increases, your compressor has a Honda engine versus the Subaru engine, and you get more accessories including a hose reel, vacuum cover, twenty five foot vacuum hose, an extra vacuum filter, grill mask, and chemical foggers and antimicrobial chemicals.

The key to great duct work cleaning service is the power and filtration capabilities of the vacuums used by your local IAQ service provider. If they use Abatement Technologies portable power vacuums you can be sure they are using the best available commercially.

Some of the things that set Abatement Technologies vacuums apart from their competitors are the use of backward curved blowers perfectly matched to the high efficiency motors that provide close to twice the power of other systems. The higher power allows more to be vacuumed from ductwork even when the filters are loaded. This also extends the life of the filters and keeps the contractor’s costs down.

By making the blowers of their motors out of anodized high strength aluminum, Abatement Technologies greatly increases the useful life of the vacuums over those with plastic blowers.

The use of patented multiple stage filtration extends filter life and keeps the maintenance and air duct cleaning costs of your vacuum to a minimum. There are three stages in the filtration system with closed cell neoprene gaskets to reduce the escape of any particles to insure the highest indoor quality for your customers.
