Purchasing carpet cleaning products is a relatively easy job, but it requires a great deal of research to determine which products will work for your particular cleaning situation. Determining what type of stain is involved and what type of surface needs to be cleaned will narrow the list of probable cleaners for you.

You need to know whether the stain is oil or water based, whether the fabric has been treated, or whether it is a hard floor (wood, laminate, vinyl or linoleum). Once you have this information in hand go to your local grocery or discount store and head to the cleaning products area.

Baking soda has a high pH factor and it is this that helps to eliminate rather than mask odors by neutralizing the smell at the source. You can create your own soft scrub cleanser with a little liquid detergent.
