Furniture Moving Companies
67Moving Options – Move Yourself or Contract The Job
Whether you are moving across the street or across the country you will need to consider the use of furniture moving companies. There are a number of companies that specialize in moving people across the country. Major national furniture moving companies are Mayflower, Atlas Van Lines, United Van Lines and Apollo Van Lines.
There are also a number of regional companies that will move you locally or within a couple of states radius of your location. These companies offer a wide range of services in addition to the actual moving of your belongings to a new location.
Who is paying the cost of your relocation is a major factor in your choice of furniture moving companies. The major national moving companies like Mayflower employ full time estimators to come to your house and give you a firm quote on what the cost is to move you.
You will need to determine before you even have an estimator come out whether you will be handling the packing of household items or whether you want the moving company to do it in addition to packing and moving just your furniture.
Packing and boxing the multitude of stuff you have accumulated over the years is a time consuming task. You need to locate a packing supply company that you can purchase padding, packing materials, tape and moving boxes. You have to have an inventory of items that need special size boxes like mirrors, artwork and mattresses and box springs.
UHaul is a great source for packing materials, bags for mattresses and furniture, boxes and other moving supplies. They even offer to buy back any unused boxes or packing material at the price you paid as long as it is still in its packaging.
For local moves or even one way moves of household items that are of relatively low quantity making the decision to move yourself can save you a great deal of money. Local moves used to be very economical if you used an Uhaul truck for only the largest pieces of furniture. For the low price of $19.95 a day you used to get about thirty five miles before you had to pay their per mile rate.
For a move to a new apartment in town, that meant you could get the job done for less than twenty dollars plus tax with the help of a few friends. Uhaul has changed their policy and now there are no free miles included with the daily rental price.
No matter how far you are moving, proper packing of fragile and valuable items is the most important factor if you want to keep moving damage to a minimum. For any move almost all furniture moving companies offer a standard insurance based on the weight of the household items you are moving.
There is usually another step higher that increases the amount per pound you would be reimbursed in the case of a claim and there is an even higher premium you can pay that will cover the replacement cost of anything in your items that would become damaged in transit. The key to all of these insurance policies are that you will need to make sure that any damage found is noted in the first 30 days after the delivery of your load.
Any damage found after that will not be covered unless otherwise noted in the policy details. The standard insurance is ridiculous as it offers less than a dollar a pound for your household items. If your lamp breaks and it weighs five pounds you would get less than five dollars to replace it. Imagine a one hundred pound dresser being damaged.
You would get less than one hundred dollars for an item that would cost you four to five times as much to repair let alone replace. If you do not have items that have a high appraisal value then you can save yourself a few hundred dollars on your total move. Getting the premium insurance that pays for replacement cost is an expensive proposition. Think about if you have antiques, crystal or other items that have a high insurance value like artwork or other easily damaged items.
If your move is being handled corporately within a particular budget range, getting the premium insurance policy for your belongings may be of more interest than the packing services offered by the full service company.

I usually try to pack what I can, myself. I used an Orlando moving company the last time, and they did a pretty good job at packing and covering my furniture so there are no nicks or scratches. I got insurance, nonetheless. I live by myself, so the personnel was a big help in the moving process. We got it done efficiently and quickly.
