Do you like to work with people on a day to day basis in a very personal way? Would you like to help people regain flexibility, relieve pain and improve their quality of life?

Massage therapy is an excellent career and you can become a licensed massotherapist in less than two years. How to get started? You may think that online massage therapy courses are the way to go. If you have a full time job and family there might not be enough time to attend massage therapy school in person. Online massage therapy courses can help you get started on your way to a new career that allows you to set your own hours, rates and place of business. You can make you own way and set the schedule to your liking once you have become a licensed massage therapist.

Almost all cities have some sort of massage therapy school that will allow you to attend full time during the day, hold evening classes or even take some online massage therapy courses. It may seem to be a little against common sense that you could take online courses and be successful. Most online massage therapy courses are introductory and go through the various types of massage, different strokes and strengths teaching you how to become certified. The Southwest Institute of Healing Arts offers Massage Therapy Training, a Master Massage Practitioner degree and Professional Massage licensure.

The Professional Massage certification requires a seven hundred fifty hour program that exceeds that average five hundred hour certificate most states require. This program allows you additional time to complete additional one or two areas of specialty. Upon completion you receive an additional Certificate of Excellence in your areas of specialty. Oriental, Cranial and Polarity are a few of the specialties available. Most employers are looking for new candidates with multiple areas of expertise and you can command a greater starting salary with this Professional Massage certification.

Always tell your patient to relax when performing any type of massage.
A pleasant and relaxing atmosphere is extremely important when practicing massage.

The Southwest Institute of Healing Arts Master Massage Practitioner Program is a one thousand hour program that doubles the hours necessary to take and complete the National Certification tests to become a Nationally Certified Therapeutic Massage therapist. As with the Professional Massage Practitioner program you have the time available to complete additional specialty areas that will allow you to find a position at any facility nationwide needing the skills of a Master Massage Practitioner. You could also start your own private practice and be sure that you will have the best product to provide customers in your chosen area of practice.

Other coursework provided by Southwest Institute include certificates for the BodyWork Practice of Tui Na and Zen Shiatsu. Tui Na means push pull in English. It is a massage practice of using hand techniques and active stretching to achieve desired results. Tui Na is used to correct skeleto-muscular irregularities, improve blood flow to help in healing and prevent further injury.

Zen Shiatsu is a much more physical method of massage and can utilize the feet, knees, elbows, palms, fingers and thumbs. Being able to ascertain what is not in correct alignment with established meridians is a key to successful Shiatsu massage. Shiatsu massage works directly on the autonomous nervous system which results in reduced tension and stress. Shiatsu is commonly thought to increase immunity and reduce stress related injury and sickness.

Online massage therapy courses will get you the basics you need before the clinical hours necessary to become certified in your state of residence or where you are going to practice your massage therapy. Total hours vary depending on your level of certification desired along with the particular state’s requirements. Most certification programs run between three hundred (six months) and one thousand (two years) hours. Some of the places you can expect to find employment are fitness clubs, gyms, sports medicine facilities, physical therapy offices, chiropractic offices, spas and private homes.

Standard courses are deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, and anatomy. You need to know what muscles you are working with to provide the desired result. To be most successful, becoming certified in a couple of different areas of specialty massage will make you that much more employable. As a certified massage therapist you can expect to earn between fifteen to thirty dollars an hour or more if you have your own practice.

In order to get some really good knowledge about massage you should start looking, at least for the beginning, for a few online massage therapy schools where you can learn the basics and form a general idea about how is it done.

Besides massage therapy courses we also recommend our readers to think about more alternative ways to cure human dependencies, especially smoking. Did you ever know that it's possible to quit smoking with the help of hypnotherapy? Now you have the chance to read a really good article about this issue. Get started right now!

I know several people whom have greatly benefited by learning about reflexology in great detail before they do alternative therapy courses. Here is one hubpage about reflexology that I just visited - http://hubpages.com/hub/Reflexology-massage . Interesting stuff.
